Overview

Career outcomes

The Master of Architecture / Master of Urban Planning double master degree provides graduates with a solid foundation for a future career in architecture, urban planning and the built environment, or provides a platform for students from industry to strategically develop expertise for further career development.

"As a graduate working in architecture, it’s essential to understand the context within which a building is situated to fully realise its design potential. I work with engineers, consultants and historians and I think being able to empathise and collaborate with industry is one of the key things I learned."

— Ariani Anwar, Master of Architecture graduate, John Wardle Architects

"I think I had always been fascinated by the way that humans interact with each other, and the way that communities form and prosper. When I started my undergraduate degree, I was exposed to a lot of urban planning content, and I realised that this great field existed that would allow me to explore both elements of human geography, and physical design and organisation. I chose to pursue the Master of Urban Planning to build on this knowledge, as well as to learn some of the more practical skills that would be required to work as an urban planner."

— Claudia Lombard, Master of Urban Planning graduate, Tract Consultants

Once you have completed the double master degree, you will be well positioned to work for private architecture firms, government departments, local councils, institutional bodies, project management firms, research institutions, specialised consultancies, trade specialists or set up your own practice working on residential, commercial and institutional projects.

The private and public sectors in Australia and internationally employ our graduates in an increasing range of areas, including urban planning and design, environmental and transport planning consultancy, property development, and housing and community advocacy. There are also opportunities in tertiary education and research.

You may also move into related careers such as industrial design, furniture design, interior design, project management and development, and conservation and heritage management.
