Student experience

Overview

As an electrical engineering student, gain opportunities to network with industry, develop your professional skills and connect with a dynamic cohort of students from around the world.

Our dedicated team of academics employ innovative, student-centric teaching approaches to help you develop the technical and personal skills you need to affect meaningful change in the world through engineering.

Project-based learning

Through a progression of project-based subjects, you will experience the full scope of engineering projects, from ideation and design through to implementation and operation.

Starting with a guided project in Embedded System Design, you’ll gain experience with microprocessor-based electronic systems and work through the design, implementation, testing, and documentation phases of an embedded systems engineering project.

Enrol in one of our design clinic subjects focused on autonomous systems or communication and networks. You’ll gain hands-on, practical experience integrating concepts from each domain while utilizing modern technology to address real-world challenges.

Towards the end of your studies, you will have the opportunity to lead a project to address a real-world industry, design or research problem in the Engineering Capstone Subject.

Internship project

Take our Internship subject and intern for an organisation in banking and finance, human-computer interaction, technology consulting, health and more.

Professional skills development

Participate in our Skills Towards Employment Program (STEP) and improve your communication, team work, project management and leadership skills.

Be personally mentored by successful alumni and industry mentors through our STEM Industry Mentoring program.

Profile

Elizabeth Walz

"My journey with electrical engineering at UniMelb enriched me with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical skills that allowed me to design electronic circuits on breadboards, simulate control systems of robots, create a CPU using Verilog, program a Kobuki robot, build an Arduino-driven, smart home study companion, participate in a ‘brain-controlled’ electric wheelchair retrofit project and more. As a member then Vice President of MUEEC, my experience also highlights that joining the community unlocks opportunities to gaining even more hands-on project experience, building industry connections, and becoming a part of a vibrant social network of aspiring electrical engineers."
