Student profile: Sally Gearon – Sales Coordinator, Thames and Hudson
Sally Gearon majored in art history during her undergraduate studies, and was pursuing a career in galleries when she realised that her favourite part of working in the gallery was the book shop and the publications that were produced for exhibition – so she decided to pursue a career in books.
“I’ve always been an avid reader, and like most book lovers starting out in publishing I thought I wanted to be an editor, because that was the only job I knew about,” she says.
But through her Master of Publishing and Communications studies Sally soon realised there were many other roles involved in publishing – and that she was in fact better suited to the post-production side.
The Grattan Street Press subject has been a highlight for Sally, and where she had her first hands-on experience in the industry. “In this subject, you ‘work’ for the University’s own Grattan Street Press for a semester in an assigned role,” she explains. “I was the Sales Manager, and I found it the most useful, interesting and rewarding subject of my tertiary education.”
She then completed a marketing internship at illustrated book publisher Thames and Hudson. By the end of her internship, Sally had been offered a permanent role.
“The Master of Publishing and Communications is a very practical degree,” Sally says. “It not only prepared me for a career in publishing, but actively produced opportunities to start my career, which I have managed to do even before I completed my studies.”
