Overview

In this course, you will explore the emerging fields of Educational Neuroscience and the Science of Learning. Particular focus is on how an understanding of the mechanisms of learning can inform and improve pedagogical practice and learning outcomes.

You will learn how to evaluate the validity of educational, psychological and neuroscientific research. This will ensure you can critically reflect on your own teaching philosophies and practices, and make informed choices about new educational methods and products.

This subject will explore the philosophical, theoretical, and practical fundamentals of the emerging field of the Science of Learning. The focus of this subject will be how the cognitive and neural mechanisms of learning can meaningfully inform and improve pedagogical practice and learning outcomes. This subject will provide students with an explanation of the scientific method, neuroimaging and brain research, and human cognition (including attention, executive functions, memory, language), and their implications for education. More generally, students will learn scientific principles and be equipped with the skills to scientifically evaluate the validity of educational, psychological, and neuroscientific claims.

This subject will explore the practical application of the emerging field of the Science of Learning. Students will examine the ways that science can inform educational practice and how the application of scientific research and methodology can be implemented in the creation, delivery and evaluation of educational programs or interventions. Specifically, students will learn how neuroscience, psychology, and educational research can -- and cannot -- be successfully translated into classroom practice. More generally, students will be equipped with the skills to scientifically evaluate the validity of educational, psychological and neuroscientific research. These skills will allow students to become knowledgeable and effective consumers of commercial educational products and methods, enable them to critically reflect on their own teaching effectiveness, and to develop novel and effective instructional practices to promote inclusion and sustainability.
