Application fee exemptions
You‘re eligible for a fee exemption if any of the below apply to you. If you’re asked to pay an application fee during the online application process and you believe that's an error, contact Stop 1 on 13 MELB (13 6352).
Applying for a graduate research course
(Note: Graduate coursework applicants are not exempt.)
- Complete the ‘Register’ section of your online application to obtain a username/application ID.
- Complete the fee waiver form and attach to your application a copy of your official letter confirming your government or employer sponsorship.
- The University will respond via email with the outcome of your request.
- You can then proceed with your application.

Students who would like to attend the University of Melbourne on an exchange and study abroad program follow a different application process and do not have to pay the application fee.
If you’ve been asked to pay an application fee, it means you have incorrectly selected a full degree program. Cancel that application and start again.
- Complete the ‘Register’ section of your application to obtain a username/application ID.
- Complete the fee waiver form and attach to your application a copy of your nomination letter from your home institution stating that you meet the eligibility requirements under the institutional agreement. Your request will not be approved without this nomination letter.
- The University will respond via email with the outcome of your request.
- You can then proceed with your application.

Complete the fee waiver form and attach a copy of your current visa information to your application. To be eligible for an application fee waiver, you must:
- Have applied for or hold a temporary Australian humanitarian visa or have applied for a permanent Australian humanitarian visa; and
- Satisfy the course prerequisites and have achieved at least the minimum entry score for your preferred University of Melbourne course.
