Eligibility

Each graduate research course has minimum entry requirements that you must check and meet before applying. Check the course page details to learn what these are.

Minimum entry requirements help ensure you’re academically prepared and have a strong chance of succeeding. Meeting minimum entry requirements means you're eligible to be considered for entry, but it doesn't guarantee selection.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants

The University has several entry pathways and programs for Indigenous researchers interested in a graduate research degree.

If you're thinking about a PhD or other graduate research at the University of Melbourne, visit the Indigenous Research Support page for details about support and pathways, and how to contact us to discuss your options.

English language requirements

Each graduate research course has a specific English language standard you must meet. The required scores are published on each course page.

As a domestic graduate research applicant, you'll generally meet the English language requirement if you're from an English-speaking background or have completed tertiary study within the last two years that was taught and assessed entirely in English.

If you're required to show additional evidence of your English proficiency, there are additional English programs and tests you can take.

How you're selected

The selection panel will consider a range of factors when assessing your application, including eligibility, prior academic performance and other criteria.

Selection information is published in Handbook and on each course page.
