  • An official letter or email securing a University of Melbourne academic supervisor who agrees to support your project and act as a temporary supervisor while you are on exchange.

English language requirements

This information applies to coursework programs only.

If you study at an institution where English is the language of instruction and all subjects are taught and assessed in English, this will meet the English Language requirement for exchange and study abroad at the University of Melbourne.

You’ll need to meet the University’s English language requirements if your current or previous study was not conducted in English.

You can demonstrate this in several ways:

  • If you have a non-English speaking background, you can take an approved English language test.
  • If you have an English-speaking background, you can meet the requirement through completion of an approved secondary school English subject.

If you’re applying based on an English language test or English subject, you’ll need to meet the required scores or grades for our undergraduate English language requirements.

Information for applicants from Europe

Some European applicants may meet the English language requirement through recognised school or national qualifications.

You may also be eligible if you provide a language reference letter from your home institution stating your proficiency is equivalent to a C1 level under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

You can find subject prerequisites in the Handbook's individual subject pages.

Meeting the minimum entry requirements does not guarantee access to all subjects.
