What to prepare

Folio requirements

Visual sequence

Applicants are required to submit a visual sequence in response to a provided prompt. The visual sequence assesses your ability to tell an original and effective story using a visual sequence of nine images.

Create a sequence of images that conveys a developing story and ends with an unexpected twist. The meaning should be self-evident and not need a written explanation (it is not a storyboard). Any text used should not advance the story. You may determine the visual content and style of the response. Assessors will look for visual compositions that are distinctive and convey meaning clearly.

Short story

Applicants are required to submit a written short story in response to a provided prompt. The written test assesses your ability to create an original and engaging story (maximum 800 words) that would be suitable to develop into a screenplay for a five- to ten-minute screen production. We are looking for stories that, although written in prose, are imagined with the screen in mind, and are therefore driven by action.

The creative prompts for the visual sequence and short story will be available in the Creative Application Platform (SlideRoom) when applications open.

Film upload

Upload a short film or video of your filmmaking work (up to five minutes). Ideally, you will have written, directed and or/produced this work, or had substantial creative input into the production.

For films longer than five minutes, applicants should choose the five-minute section that best represents them as a filmmaker. You may upload more than one film/video - but the total may not exceed five minutes. Please note that we strongly advise you not to submit an edited showreel, but would prefer longer clips from work or an entire work(s).

Pitch your ideas

Briefly outline two ideas for short productions you envisage making if offered a place in the course (200 words each). You may be asked to discuss your ideas in detail if shortlisted for an interview.

Interview requirements (shortlisted applicants only)

The interview will run for approximately 30 minutes and will be conducted online via Zoom. Due to time restrictions, the panel will not read scripts or writing samples during or after the interview.

Shortlisted applicants should prepare to discuss:

  • Their folio
  • Pitch (verbal) two original screen ideas that may be developed during their studies.

How to submit your selection tasks

Your folio must be uploaded and submitted via the Creative Application Platform (SlideRoom). We recommend allowing plenty of time to prepare and submit your creative tasks. Applications after the published closing day cannot be accepted.

The interview will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
